Excavations and Foundations in Soft Soils

The book reviews practical experiences on excavations and foundations found in and on soft soil deposits. These reviews are complemented with new research results.

Geotechnical design and execution of civil engineering structures on very soft soils are usually associated with substantial difficulties. The aim of the authors is to give an overview of the material properties of soft soils and their application in excavations. This overview is extended to different types of foundations and stabilization methods.

The authors emphasize, however, that soft soil layers should not necessarily be classified as extremely difficult and highly cost intensive. By making use of advance knowledge in soft soil engineering in the field of geotechnical engineering it is possible to attain a technically safe and economically justifiable solution for a particular construction project. The book contributes much in this regard.

The book is intended to serve practicing and research engineers in the field of geotechnical engineering. Civil and structural engineers, and advanced students may also find it a useful reference work.
