    Prestress Manual for Inspectors

PREFACE This study manual is designed for self-study by individuals planning to seek certification as a

Certified Prestress Quality Control Inspector under the guidelines of the Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT). Items that will be covered in this manual are intended to give the inspector some basic instruction and interpretation of the Iowa DOT m

ethods and acceptable standard practices of prestress concrete unit fabrication.

Successful completion of this 3 day instructional course, achieving a 80% or greater score on the final exam, and 40 hours of direct supervision by a Certified Inspector are the requirements needed to becom

e certified. Recertification will be granted for a 5-year period.

    INTRODUCTION

This manual, although containing some information on basic prestressing, is intended for use by

individuals having a basic understanding of prestressed concrete fabrication.

The text included in this manual is intended to be used as a tool to better understand and meet the requirements (specifications) for prestressed concrete units fabricated for use on projects administered by the Iowa DOT.

This course is presented as a cooperative effort between the Iowa Association of Prestressed Concrete Manufacturers and the Iowa DOT to provide training for both fabricator and agency personnel involved in the quality control (QC) aspects of prestress fabrication. The goal of this training is to achieve more uniform

fabrication quality control and acceptance (QC/QA) throughout the entire state. The program will help assure that QC/QA inspection is performed by qualified personnel.

    The benefits of unif
orm specification interpretation and consistent quality fabrication practices should reduce production costs while maintaining the quality of finished products. Consistent results come from continually applying QC principles.
