Preface to 7th edition

Account has been taken in this edition of changes in British

Standards, the Approved Documents to the Building Regulations,

and of developments in constructional techniques; in

particular, advantage has been taken of the opportunity

to bring up to date much of the material. In this last task,

generous help has been received from many members of

the construction industry.

The comprehensive format of previous editions has been

preserved, and much of the traditional practices shown in the



earlier publications is retained for reference to our existing

buildings stock. In addition to the references mentioned

above, a considerable contribution is made by the companion

volumes in the Mitchell’s Building Series.

Where appropriate, the complimentary references are mentioned

in the text or noted at each chapter ending.

This volume is the introductory part of two volumes and

the content intended as preliminary reading to Structure

and Fabric Part 2.
