On August 1, 2007, just after 6:00 p.m., during the evening rush hour in Minneapolis, the 1,900-foot-long, eight-lane i-35w bridge buckled
and crashed into the Mississippi River. Massive plumes of dense smoke
and dust filled the air. A mighty interstate bridge of concrete and
steel had fallen suddenly, and the shock and pain were felt in the Twin Cities,
across the state, and around the world. Thirteen people died, 145 were
injured. The unimaginable had happened—right here on
the doorstep of our University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus.
