Steel Tips-Design of Reduced Beam Section (RBS) Moment Frame Connection
I. Introduction
When subjected to a major earthquake, build- ings designed to meet the design require-
ments of typical building codes, such as the
UniI'orm Building ~ Code (1997), are expected to have damage to both structural and non- structural elements. The structural design for large seismic events must therefore explicitly consider the effects of response beyond the elastic range. The "Special Moment Frame" (SMF) steel building system is designed such that the connections between the frame beams and columns absorb substantial energy and provide major contributions to the displacement ductility demand.
