caused dozens of deaths and over $20
billion in losses. In 1995 an earthquake
in Kobe, Japan, killed more than
5,000 and resulted in losses of well over $100 billion.
These disasters show the damage earthquakes

there is general agreement that damaging
earthquakes will strike the United States in the
next few decades, causing at the minimum dozens
of deaths and tens of billions of dollars in losses.
