Stress State Variables
The mechanical behavior of a soil (Le., the volume change and shear strength behavior) can be described in terms of
the state of stress in the soil. The state of stress in a soil consists of certain combinations of stress variables that can
be referred to as stress state variables. A more complete definition of the tern “stress state variable” is given in
Chapter 1. These variables should be independent of the physical properties of the soil. The number of stress state variables required for the description of the stress state of a soil depends primarily upon the number of phases in-
volved. -
