What you'll learn
Oil and Gas Drilling Engineering
Petroleum Engineering
Oil and Gas Well Control
Oil and Gas Industry

Requirements
Interest in Oil and Gas Drilling Engineering
Description
This short course will present the Drilling Operations Management and Risks Control principle and foundations overview in the domain of Drilling Engineering of oil and gas industry. Major outline topics will to be presented: •Introduction and Hazards vs Risks Overview in Drilling Engineering •Administrative and Engineering Controls •Drilling Project Risks•Risk Management The presentation focuses on managing risks in drilling operations through administrative and engineering controls. It begins with a safety moment highlighting the importance of energy isolation through lockout/tagout procedures. The introduction outlines the upstream, midstream, and downstream sectors of the oil and gas industry, highlighting the complexities and potential hazards in drilling operations.
The presentation emphasizes that drilling risk management should be commensurate with the specific site conditions and regularly reviewed throughout the project lifecycle.Key topics include the distinction between hazards and risks, and the implementation of administrative and engineering controls in pre-drilling, drilling/well construction, and well delivery stages. Specific control measures include contract review, project management plans, safety systems, competent teams, rig audits, emergency response plans, safety meetings, well control equipment integrity, daily drilling reports, and waste management.
The presentation outlines potential risks such as geohazards (formation pressure, shallow gas, well kicks, losses), equipment and material failures, human factors (skill levels, workload, fatigue), and local conditions. The presentation concludes with an overview of risk management, including risk analysis (qualitative and quantitative) and a strategic approach to risk management, using risk assessment matrix. Options include risk avoidance, reduction, transfer, or retention.
